Fincantieri has started the construction of the Italian Navy’s logistic support ship included under the Navy’s fleet renewal plan, a €3.5 billion project for six patrol vessels and four more in option, and one logistic support unit, whose main contractors are Fincantieri and Finmeccanica.
The beginning of the build involves also RINA Services, which develops and offers various services concerning ship classification, certification, verification of conformity, inspection and testing.
The Logistic Support Ship (LSS) will be classified by RINA following the international environmental conventions regarding pollution prevention in the more traditional aspects, like the ones of the MARPOL Convention, as well as those not yet mandatory, as the Hong Kong Convention about ship-recycling.
The steel cutting ceremony of the ship’s stern was held at the Italian shipyard’s facility in Riva Trigoso, Genoa.
During the next months, the 86-meter long section weighting 7.000 tonnes will be launched and moved to Muggiano (La Spezia), where it is going to be assembled to set up the unit with the bow section. A second steel cutting ceremony took place on February 16th at the company’s shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia.
The LSS will feature a fully equipped hospital offering healthcare capabilities, complete with operating rooms, radiology and analysis rooms, a dentist’s office and rooms for seriously injured patients hosting up to 12 people.
The ship will be used to transport and transfer to other vessels used for liquids such as diesel fuel, jet fuel, or fresh water, and solids including emergency spare parts, food and ammunitions. The LSS will also be able to perform repairs and maintenance work for other vessels at sea. She is scheduled to be delivered by 2019.
