A quantum leap
Recently, Setec has experienced significant growth in the boating industry. Despite primarily serving the industrial sector, the company has gained popularity in yachting circles due to their products’ sleek and essential designs, high IP ratings, and excellent controllability, making them suitable for guest areas onboard.
The company’s venture into boating began over 25 years ago when a client requested a telescopic shaft as an alternative to hydraulic systems. This marked a pivotal moment for Setec. Despite initially considering it a gamble, they quickly designed and delivered the telescopic shaft within a week. Recognizing its potential, they decided to manufacture it as a general-purpose product. This innovation addressed the issue of aesthetically unappealing fixed masts on superyachts, leading to the company’s successful entry and growth in the boating industry.
The main solutions
Setec’s quantum leap occurred in the boating sector, particularly in the superyacht industry, starting in 2017 with the development of the Electromast. This innovative telescopic electromechanical mast is designed to raise the required navigation lights on ships exceeding 50 meters in length.
Following the success of the Electromast, Setec introduced other groundbreaking products:
- The Electrotraslo, available in an Aero version, integrates dinghy handling and hatch-opening functionalities in garages.
- The Electroforce servo actuators (electrocylinders) are used to operate hatches, stern/bow platforms, and balconies, featuring options in stainless steel or with specialized steel-treated coatings.
- The Electromast shaft has been deployed in both new installations and retrofits, with Setec often replacing unwanted hydraulic systems on board. Similarly, the Electrotraslo is suitable for both initial installations and retrofitting, catering to evolving needs such as ship modifications and expansions.
Tailor-made suits
The Setec Group offers the yachting industry bespoke solutions akin to “tailor-made suits,” leveraging decades of expertise in industrial automation to excel in customization. Despite beginning with a standard product range, Setec is renowned for designing and producing personalized products and systems for various sectors, including boating.
Their product line has evolved over time and remains dynamic, driven by the risingdemand for customization in construction projects. Setec’s ability to tailor solutions to specific needs underscores their commitment to innovation and adaptability in response to evolving market demands.
Electromechanical movement of tenders and water toys
The keyword concept of customization is exemplified by the Electrotraslo system, which originated from a request to develop an electromechanical solution capable of moving tenders and simultaneously opening garage doors. This innovation significantly reduces costs for construction sites by eliminating complex hydraulic wiring in garages, saving tens of thousands of euros.
Setec’s General Manager, Fabio Seminatore, recalled a recent project with a major Italian shipyard where extensive customizations were required, ultimately resulting in a fully bespoke product tailored to the client’s needs. Electrotraslo facilitates the electromechanical movement of tenders and water toys between superyacht garages and the water. Its dual arms can open the tailgate and handle the tender concurrently, synchronized for seamless operation. Compared to hydraulic systems, the electrical solution simplifies these movements, offering greater efficiency and versatility.
Ceiling-mounted and wall-mounted versions
The keyword system, known as Aerostraslo, is a ceiling-mounted solution designed to handle tenders up to approximately 9 meters in length. Alternatively, there is the Walltraslo, a wall-mounted version suited for smaller boats around 5 meters in length. These systems are tailored to accommodate various garage sizes and address challenges related to limited height constraints.
The Aerostraslo features a compact design made from aluminum and steel, with a fixed C-shaped structure bolted to the ceiling. It incorporates one or two telescopic arms that slide out from the fixed part, each equipped with a movable hoist. Both the arms and hoists operate on recirculating guides, requiring precise manufacturing tolerances for effective functionality. One unique feature of the Aerostraslo is its ability to not only move the tender but also open the garage door simultaneously by rotating it upward, simplifying the overall garage handling system architecture.
The system’s second version, utilizing similar guidance systems but different structural elements and translation mechanisms, employs trapezoidal threaded screw and nut marine alloy systems instead of rack and pinion. This design allows for manual operation from inside the ship in case of electrical issues, offering a cost-effective yet equally efficient alternative solution.
Telescopic mast
The keyword product, Electromast, is a telescopic mast designed for electromechanical operation of bow lights, protected by patents in Italy and Europe. Constructed primarily from carbon and aluminum, it comprises three extension elements and is powered by a self-braking three-phase electric motor. This motor includes a manual release lever for use during power outages and features a limit switch unit in the standard version or an integrated encoder and inverter in the EVO1 version.
This product is based on a standard platform but can be tailored for individual installations. Over the years, it has evolved to enhance strength, durability, and to meet increasing customer demands for comprehensive solutions. Since the first delivery in 2017, Setec has expanded the Electromast offering with additional features such as:
Customizable upper and intermediate counterflanges for hull welding, often in specific materials to match site designs.
- A cable winch that integrates the light supply cable along with a guiding roller.
- An end plate for flush deck installations, incorporating integrated light support within the optics.
- Various accessories including stay attachment flanges for connection to the second stringer, and corresponding hull attachments.
These advancements demonstrate Setec’s commitment to innovation and responsiveness to customer needs within the marine industry.
Two different versions
The keyword product, Electromast, is an innovative telescopic mast designed for electromechanical operation of bow lights, protected by patents in Italy and Europe. Constructed primarily from carbon fiber and aluminum, it consists of three extendable elements and is powered by a self-braking three-phase electric motor. This motor includes a manual release lever for use during power outages and features a limit switch unit in the standard version or an integrated encoder and inverter in the EVO1 version.
The Electromast has evolved over time to enhance strength, durability, and to meet increasing customer demands for comprehensive solutions.
Different versions of the Electromast include:
· EVO1: equipped with a three-phase motor with motoinverter and a Controlmast PLC control panel that communicates with the dashboard. This version allows for programmed cycles and offers advanced integration compared to the standard version.
· EVO2: features a brushless synchronous permanent-magnet servo motor with an integrated position sensor and brake. This version is smaller, lighter, and offers the same advanced features as EVO1 but with a brushless motor.
The Electromast actuator is a purely electromechanical linear cylinder with 2 or 3 telescopic carbon fiber/aluminum driven rods. Marine-treated driving parts are made from a special lightweight alloy. It is designed to hoist navigation lights on ships longer than 50 meters.
