Ferrari Hypersail – the groundbreaking 100-foot flying monohull project conceived to take on the world’s oceans – has announced its new operational hub in Livorno, based within the facilities of Azimut Yachts.

The new facility is conceived as the project’s true home, while also serving as the central hub for both onshore and offshore operations. It provides a first-class infrastructure to support the logistics and practical management of the next phases of development and on-water testing.

The facility will house dedicated offices for the project team, engineers and shore crew, as well as gyms and training areas, alongside specialised workshops for hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems and 3D printing. The base will also serve as a focal point for project partners, stakeholders and guests, fostering collaboration among all the parties contributing to the growth of Ferrari Hypersail.

Close to Maranello

The facility offers direct access to the Tyrrhenian Sea, providing a wide range of sailing and sea conditions that are ideal for conducting a structured and continuous testing programme. This is further enhanced by its close proximity to Maranello, enabling constant collaboration and the exchange of expertise with the various Ferrari engineering and design departments supporting the project’s technological development.

We are proud to announce the opening of our operational hub in Livorno, a key milestone that represents far more than simply a workplace for the yacht. This facility has been conceived as the true home of the Ferrari Hypersail project, a place designed for the Team’s day-to-day activities and to welcome all those involved in the project, sharing every stage of this challenge with them. Having access to such a strategic location on the Tyrrhenian Sea, ideally suited for both technical and athletic preparation as well as sea trials, while also being close to Maranello, provides us with the perfect conditions to further accelerate our innovation process.

Designed to bring together activities

The building and its interior spaces have been designed to bring together all Ferrari Hypersail activities in a functional and strategic manner. The colour scheme draws inspiration from the yacht’s livery, with Hypersail Grey and Fly Yellow alternating in a clean and rigorous composition that incorporates two types of window structures: glazed sections are dedicated to the offices, while polycarbonate panels identify the areas reserved for the yacht itself.

At the entrance portal, a reproduction of the bow’s technical front view reveals the orientation the yacht assumes inside the hangar. A similar design feature appears on the building’s roof, where the yacht’s technical plan view is depicted in its entirety, with the bow facing toward the hangar exit.

My team and I enthusiastically embraced our involvement in the Hypersail project, supporting its evolution through to the design of its operational base. This journey of research and experimentation, which has taken us beyond the traditional boundaries of our design field, has strengthened our belief that design is not merely a matter of form, but a tool capable of driving innovation through a virtuous process of cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Collaboration with Azimut

The creation of the facility forms part of the broader collaboration agreement between Ferrari Hypersail and Azimut Yachts, two Italian companies united by a shared commitment to innovation, research and a culture of performance.

As Technical Partner, Azimut Yachts will develop a custom Azimut Fly 72 support boat that will accompany Ferrari Hypersail during both testing and operational activities at sea. The vessel will be used to assist the Ferrari Hypersail yacht during its initial flight tests and, subsequently, to provide support and monitoring throughout sailing trials, while also serving as a hospitality boat.

The start of construction on the future base marks one of the most significant milestones in the evolution of Ferrari Hypersail and reflects Ferrari’s commitment to equipping the project with the infrastructure needed to support its development in the years ahead.
