Amsterdam-based Edorado Marine, after two years of extensive research and design, has created a new kind of fully electric, zero-emission powerboats, nicknamed the Tesla of speedboats.
Dezeen, a spokesperson for Edorado Marine, so explained the aim of the Dutch yard in developing such a speedboat: “Current fast electric boats are too expensive and inadequate. We at Edorado are certain that only foil-electric boats will achieve the goal of affordable fast electric boats with good range.”
The Edorado 7S is 7.15 metres long and she features an all-electric system that allows for a range of 50 miles on a single charge when travelling at 25 knots. Moreover, the powerboat boasts an innovative hydrofoil design which allows the boat to ride above the water, thus reducing drag and increasing maximum speed and range. The boat will be able to travel at speeds of up to 40 knots, while a conventional speedboat can go twice as fast.
The boat has a very simple design, inspired to the technology in use in the America’s Cup. Tom Speer, in fact, is part of the design team for Oracle Team USA and was responsible for the hydrodynamic design of the Edorado 7s, on which he commented: “The hydrofoil design minimises the required power-up to 40 knots. It is stable in pitch, heave and roll, so the boat’s safety doesn’t depend on an active control system, which would be complex, redundant and expensive.”
The 7S has been designed to ride in lakes, rivers and coastal waters with waves up to 2 metres, according to CE-C certification. It is equipped with retractable swim steps, electric bilge pump, flush deck cleats, full boat cover, hydraulic steering and a 15-inch touch-screen with built in navigation and controls that can be read in bright sunlight. The 7s is powered by two 40kw motors.
Scott Ruck, Edorado’s US partner, commented that the team has “a unique and innovative approach to developing a superior high-performance electric sport boat.” He added: “Applying advanced technologies and clever design has produced a fast electric sport boat that finally delivers the performance the market demands. The Edorado 7S is not just a new boat, it’s a whole new boating experience, a no-compromise blending of performance, luxury, quality, and sustainability.”
The boat designed is expected to be more cost-effective than the other electric speedboats currently on the market, and yet an invitation is needed to pre-order one. Edorado Marine expects to start shipping the vehicles in 2018.
