Assomarinas and BioDesign Foundation, protocol to fight microplastics in the sea

Share:

Assomarinas, the Italian Marinas Association member of Confindustria Nautica and Federturismo Confindustria, has signed a deal with BioDesign Foundation to work together on The Custodians Plastic Race Italy 2025 project.

This plastic cleanup initiative – which will be held nationwide from October 6 to 12, 2025 – will see institutions, companies, associations and citizens involved in the fight against microplastics pollution to show the world that through a collective effort it is possible to protect our planet.

The Vox Maris project

Through The Custodians Plastic Race, BioDesign Foundation aims to collect plastic before it reaches the sea; likewise, with the Vox Maris project it is making an immediate commitment to reduce to zero the number of fishing nets thrown into the sea in Italy.

In fact, it is estimated that about 100,000 tons of nets end up in the Mediterranean every year, polluting and poisoning the sea and its fauna. To achieve this goal in Italian ports, support from everyone is important for marine conservation.

“To address the problem of plastic dispersed in nature and in our seas, a common and synergistic effort is essential. This is why I decided to join the BioDesign Foundation project: to show that together we can all make a difference in keeping our seas clean by promoting responsible behavior and raising awareness of the importance of ocean preservation.” – Roberto Perocchio, President of Assomarinas.

Initiatives

On April 3 in Rome, during “The Custodians Earth Solution Symposium,” BioDesign Foundation organized a conference (10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Salone delle Colonne at EUR) with scholars, scientists and academics to discuss the urgency of the problem related to the spread of microplastics pollution in the environment and their effects on health. The topic will also be addressed at the Icomia World Conference of Tourist Ports, scheduled to take place in Venice, Italy, from October 15-17, 2025. This global event will also focus on sustainable ports, highlighting the role of marinas in environmental protection.
