Awlgrip Gloss Finish Primer is an industry-first solution which combines the benefits of a finish primer and a show coat in one product – helping professionals do more with less.
With fewer layers and less application steps, the new Awlgrip two-in-one solution unlocks greater time savings with no compromise on quality for both newbuild and refit projects.
Making professional applicators’ lives easier
Applicators working on real-world projects are estimating time savings of 2 to 3 weeks on small vessels, and 5 or 6 weeks for larger yachts.
For decades, professional applicators and boatyards have relied on Awlgrip® premium coatings system to provide the superior results required to meet the high standards of today’s discerning boatowner. They are accustomed to dedicating hours of demanding painting work on each project to meet tight delivery timelines.
With its latest innovation, Awlgrip makes their lives easier.
Simplifying painting processes, Gloss Finish Primer maximizes efficiency, durability and a premium finish, while also supporting faster turnaround times, reduced material use and the need for more sustainable solutions.

Two Steps Become One
Traditionally, a finish primer would be applied and sanded before a separate high-gloss show coat was used to identify surface imperfections. Any defects would then need to be repaired and sanded again prior to the final topcoat application. While effective, this method is time-intensive and disruptive to build schedules.
With Gloss Finish Primer’s unique high gloss formulation, applicators can detect and address any imperfections before the final topcoat application to avoid reworks during a crucial phase in the superyacht project. Two steps become one, without cutting corners or compromising on the high quality expected in an Awlgrip system.
Sustainable and Compatible Solution
Gloss Finish Primer not only allows professional applicators and boatyards to be more efficient, it is also more sustainable.
Less layers, combined with higher volume solids, reduce system VOC emissions by 50% per square meter when compared to using a separate show coat and finish primer.
Compatible for use as part of the Awlgrip high-performance coatings system, Gloss Finish Primer is available in white, gray, and dark blue to suit a variety of application needs.
Gloss Finish Primer represents the latest solution from Awlgrip to make customers’ jobs easier and deliver the premium finish they expect.
Exceptional Results from Live Netherlands Newbuild
One of the early adopters is Mike Voogd, founder of Excellence Yachtpainting. Mike is an experienced yacht applicator with a background of more than 20 years in the industry, including 17 years at Feadship.
Mike is highly familiar with the exceptionally high standards and level of finish required for superyacht projects, with first-hand knowledge of the time-intensive application processes, multiple coating stages and repeated sanding cycles which are often required.
To address these challenges and minimize potential delays, Mike introduced Awlgrip Gloss Finish Primer for the coating phase of a 27-m newbuild in the Netherlands.
By combining the functions of a finish primer and a show coat, the single product enabled him to streamline the preparation process without compromising on finish quality.
Veteran Applicator Reports Significant Time Savings
Based on his experience during the project, Mike estimated that using Awlgrip Gloss Finish Primer accelerated the project by two to three weeks.
Commenting on its application, Mike said: “All my painters are really excited to apply this primer. The gloss enables you to identify more imperfections, so you have time to repair the defects, and it sands really easily.”
The project was delivered in collaboration with AkzoNobel Yacht Coatings and leading coatings distributor Van Dongen Verf, with technical support and product training provided throughout the application process.
Richard Harmsen, Technical Manager at Van Dongen Verf, highlighted the benefits for professional applicators, particularly during sanding and surface preparation. Richard said: “It’s amazing and easy to apply a thick layer of nice gloss. You don’t need a show coat, and you save so much time sanding compared to a traditional epoxy. On a small vessel, you can save two to three weeks, and for a bigger yacht, it can be five or six weeks.”
Awlgrip Gloss Finish Primer is available across Europe for both newbuild and refit applications.
