New master’s degree in high-end nautical design launched at the Venice Boat Show

A new academic milestone for the Italian superyacht design education sector was officially unveiled at the Venice Boat Show, inside the historic Arsenale complex.

The launch of the First-Level Master’s Degree in “Nautical Design for High-End Pleasure Craft”, developed in collaboration with LINK University, marks a strategic step forward in the development of highly specialized nautical design training programs aligned with the evolving needs of the global luxury yacht industry.

Presented during a conference hosted at the Arsenale Tower, the initiative brought together leading representatives from academia, institutions, and the maritime industry, highlighting the growing demand for advanced professional skills in superyacht design and shipbuilding education.

Among the speakers were Giovanni Acampora (Assonautica Italiana), Antonio Bufalari (Assonautica Italiana), Elena Magro (Assonautica Veneto), Antonio Toffanelli (LINK University), and representatives of the Venice Boat Show.

A practical, industry-driven nautical design master’s program

Starting on 8 October 2026, the Master’s programme is designed to provide students with direct exposure to real-world shipbuilding and yacht design engineering processes.

At the core of the course is a high-level design challenge: the development of a pleasure vessel of approximately 500 gross tons, with a strong focus on sustainability, accessibility, and technological innovation.

Students will be required to design a yacht integrating next-generation sustainable marine propulsion systems, with particular attention to environmental impact and onboard inclusivity.

The curriculum will explore advanced technologies, including Volvo Penta’s electric azimuth propulsion systems, alongside emerging energy solutions such as hydrogen-based propulsion and other next-generation marine energy systems.

Industry leaders shaping future yacht designers

During the launch event, key industry experts highlighted the strategic skills required in modern yacht design.

Architect and researcher Paolo Ferrari, PhD, emphasized the importance of accessibility and barrier-free design in modern vessels. Shipbuilder Maurizio Magri discussed the operational complexity of yacht construction, while Nicola Pomi (Volvo Penta) presented the IPS 40 propulsion platform and its role in future marine innovation.

Massimo Malaspina (ISYBA) provided insight into brokerage dynamics and contractual frameworks within the superyacht market industry.

“We want to respond directly to the needs of shipyards by placing talented young professionals within facilities that are recognised among the best in the world,” stated Franco Gnessi, Naval Architect and Secretary General of ASPRONADI, and creator of the programme.

Strategic partnerships across the nautical sector

The Master’s programme is supported by a wide network of institutional and industrial partners, including Assonautica Italiana–Unioncamere, ASPRONADI, ISYBA, shipyards, and leading professional associations.

The faculty includes experts such as Paolo Ferrari, PhD; maritime lawyer Andrea Petragnani Ciancarelli; shipbuilder Maurizio Magri; designer and artist Giangi Razeto; and Massimo Malaspina.

The programme will be delivered in a blended-learning format, using advanced digital workstations equipped with professional tools such as Rhinoceros, widely adopted in marine and yacht design software training.

Admissions open for future nautical designers

Applications are now open for graduates in Architecture, Engineering, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, and Game Design.

Admission is subject to a technical and motivational interview with the Scientific Coordinator to assess suitability for the programme.
