y712_0The 106-metre sailing yacht project Y712 has been launched at Oceanco’s facilities in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands. Currently known under the name of Solar, the project is the resulting vessel of a contract signed by the Dutch shipyard and the US-based Moran Yacht & Ship back in April 2012 and, once completed, it will be one of the biggest sailing yacht in the world.
Both exterior and interior design have been carried out by Nuvolari & Lenard, while naval architecture was undertaken by Dykstra Naval Architects. The 106-metre vessel will feature a steel hull and aluminium superstructure: with a 15-metre beam, its volume will be of 2,700 GT.
Solar will feature a DynaRig, an interpretation of a square rigger whose concept dates back t the Sixities and has proven to be more aerodynamically efficient. When the sails are deployed, there are no gaps between them and the yards, giving the impression that they’re all one piece mounted on each mast. Such DynaRig had already been successfully employed aboard Maltese Falcon.
Thanks to advanced technical systems, this Lloyd’s registered superyacht will boast a unique array of green technologies and provide the ability to operate entirely on solar power.
Accommodation on board is provided to up to 12 guests across 6 cabins.
Dr. Al Barwani enthusiastically commented upon the vessel:  “The DNA of Oceanco is innovative. The designs are impressive and the quality of the build is very good. We have a very innovative sailing yacht which is under construction right now, the 106-metre project Y712. The owner is trying a lot of new ideas on it… It’s a one-of-a-kind with a number of new innovative technologies, which has never been used in yachts before. It’s good to have innovative owners that want to drive the industry forward!”
