A growing market: who are its new buyers?

Recreational boating is experiencing a surge in interest from a younger demographic, with buyers now averaging 15 years younger than those two decades ago. Many of these new buyers are individuals without a family history of boating, including some from overseas who have recently relocated to the Dubai area. They are drawn to recreational boating by the availability of port facilities, favorable weather conditions, and the presence of shipyard UAE. Additionally, the UAE’s appeal to 8.08 million tourists annually, seeking new and authentic experiences, contributes to the popularity of boating as one of the most favored recreational activities, alongside diving and water sports.

Boating infrastructures

The UAE’s recreational boating scene is particularly drawn to superyachts, which were prominently featured at the Dubai International Boat Show 2023, a renowned event in the Middle East attended by both local and international boat builders and accessory manufacturers.

This edition showcased over 44 superyacht models and more than 1,000 marine industry companies unveiling their latest innovations, with a notable focus on advanced navigation systems capable of withstanding harsh conditions.

Fostering the growth of recreational boating
Based in Dubai, the Leisure Marine Association Middle East North Africa (LMA MENA) promotes cooperation between companies and works on improving recreational boating industry standards and safety at sea, also collaborating with government and private sector, public authorities and associations. Abu Dhabi Marine has recently joined the association as a Gold Sponsor.

It fosters cooperation among industry players, supports training initiatives, and works towards enhancing industry standards and safety at sea. Recently, Abu Dhabi Marine, a leading marine services provider in the UAE, joined LMA MENA as a Gold Sponsor, signaling a collaborative effort to bolster recreational boating in the region.

In May, Abu Dhabi Marine, in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Maritime Transport, facilitated free moorings and parking for UAE citizensin the Al Dhafra region, promoting efficiency, safety, and environmental consciousness.

The event also showcased electric and hybrid boats, underscoring the industry’s shift towards alternative energy and infrastructure moei UAE ministry of energy sources and environmental sustainability. Prioritizing carbon emissions reduction and noise reduction not only enhances the boating experience but also safeguards coral reefs and marine life.

A strategic area for Italian exports
The UAE serves as a crucial market in the Gulf region, making it strategically important for the Italian marine industry. According to Confindustria Nautica, in 2021, exports of pleasure and sport boats from Italy to the UAE amounted to approximately €39.1 million. Key contributors to these exports include companies from the Adriatic district, with the UAE ranking fifth among the target countries for Italian boat exports. Lombard companies in the nautical sector also view the UAE as a strategic export destination, with the Middle Eastern nation ranking sixth on their list of priority markets.
