Volvo Penta continues its mission to make boating more accessible by expanding its Assisted Docking system to a wider audience. Originally launched for the Inboard Performance System (IPS) in 2021, Assisted Docking has transformed docking into a simplified, semi-automated process. As of 2025, this groundbreaking technology will be available for boats powered by DPI sterndrives, offering enhanced precision, control, and docking confidence to even more boaters.

Assisted docking for DPI sterndrives: precision and performance

The Volvo Penta Assisted Docking system is an industry-first innovation in semi-automated boating that improves docking precision and control. Now compatible with DPI sterndrives, the system brings advanced docking benefits to a wider variety of boats.

Known for its smooth shifting and handling, the Volvo Penta DPI propulsion package, introduced in 2019, includes features like a hydraulic clutch for silent gear changes and twin counter-rotating propellers for superior acceleration and maneuverability. By integrating Assisted Docking, Volvo Penta elevates the DPI system’s performance, offering boaters a refined and reliable docking experience.

How Volvo Penta assisted docking works

Initially developed for Volvo Penta IPS drivelines, the Assisted Docking system enhances captain control by automating docking processes and compensating for variables like wind and current. It leverages Volvo Penta’s Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) and advanced GPS-based sensors to maintain the vessel’s intended course, even in challenging conditions.

Using a joystick, the captain can move in straight lines and control the boat’s speed, while the system automatically compensates for external forces. The Side Push feature allows the boat to stay steady against the dock, simplifying the entire docking maneuver and ensuring stability.

Available for twin DPI installations and retrofit optionsThe Assisted Docking system is compatible with all Volvo Penta DPI installations and can be retrofitted to eligible existing boats. Owners interested in upgrading to the latest semi-automated docking technology should contact an authorized Volvo Penta dealer to determine compatibility, as it varies by boat configuration.

Collaboration towards next-level innovation

To highlight this advancement, Volvo Penta has collaborated with Nimbus, featuring the Nimbus T11 powered by a Twin D4-320 DPI package, showcasing its capabilities in a new adventure film shot in Croatia, featuring the rock climber Britta-Kajsa Mårtensson against the stunning backdrop of the Adriatic Sea.

The world premiere of Assisted Docking for DPI drives will take place at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show 2024, October 30 – November 3, where attendees will have the opportunity to experience the technology firsthand through exclusive test drives. Delivery of Assisted Docking for DPI is scheduled to begin in Q1 2025. Check out the adventure film highlighting Assisted Docking for Volvo Penta DPI drives here:
