Stainless taps with helical grooves and strong torsion

Stainless taps of the V82 and V83 series, with helical grooves and strong torsion, are specifically designed and built to tap blind holes with a depth up to 3.5 x D in stainless steels, offering high reliability as industrial tapping solutions.

In the UFS R&D department, extensive testing was carried out using various tool types and configurations – starting with super-high-speed steel (HSS) materials for the taps and progressively integrating other metals to develop higher-performance alloys. The goal was to ensure high productivity, extended tool life and reliable tapping of medium-to-high strength steels, including carbon steels, alloy steels and precision machining tools for stainless steels (work-hardening, austenitic and ferritic).

The optimal solution was determined to be high-speed steel tools HSSV3 (high-speed steel with 3% vanadium), combined with a specialized geometry: a steep 48° helix, which facilitates smooth machining, effective chip control, and a drastic reduction in built-up edge formation.

Additionally, the tools feature a TXC coating that prevents adhesive wear and promotes chip evacuation, offering excellent resistance to wear and heat. This multi-layer coating comprises a soft, self-lubricating outer layer with a low friction coefficient, underlaid by a very hard, high-durability base layer.

The synergy between geometry and coating makes the UFS V82 and V83 tap series ideal for machining tough materials prone to adhesion. Unlike generic-purpose taps – which often cause chip clogging or ‘bird’s nests’, leading to production stops – these stainless steel taps produce consistent, well-formed chips, significantly reducing interruptions in the manufacturing process.

The blue color ring easily identifies their specific application range, making them a reliable choice among helical groove taps.

Vaber worked with Politecnico di Torino to train engineering students who, between lectures and exams, design and build racing boats and single-seaters: materials, method and applied know-how at the core. They learnt when the process makes the difference – even beyond the university workshop – with Plexus structural adhesives, spray tack and infusion consumables, key elements in composite materials engineering.
